Good Morning Sober Friends. As October comes to a close and the Holiday season nears, I thought I would share some information on a book I just finished reading called This Naked Mind: Control Alcohol, Find Freedom, Discover Happiness, and Change Your Life by Annie Grace. I waited four months to get this book from the local library because there were 70 people ahead of me waiting to check it out. It was published in 2015 and there's still such a big demand for it. That spoke to me for a couple of reasons. Firstly, there are loads of people concerned with their drinking habits and secondly, if it's still buzzworthy after nearly a decade there must be something of value there. Indeed.
Why I Liked The Book:
Annie Grace, the author, is an advertising executive and explains very concisely how we are deceived by marketing into thinking alcohol makes us happier, sexier, and more fun-loving when the exact opposite is true. Alcohol is detrimental to our physical and mental health but these core beliefs we have surrounding alcohol have been instilled in us from a young age. She encourages us to take a good hard look at those beliefs and challenge whether they are true for us or not. She asks and examines questions like "Does drinking make me happy?" and "Are we really drinking for taste?"
She uses a blend of science backed data and personal experience to encourage open-minded examination of the role alcohol is playing in our lives and it's quite an eye opener. She also shifts the blame of addiction from the drinker to the substance and it's validating for someone like me who spent years feeling "defective" because I looked around and saw people who appeared to be in full control of their alcohol consumption when I was losing my grip.
The book is lined out in a way that syncs our subconscious programming about alcohol with our conscious desire to stop drinking, which is a powerful path to recovery. For this reason she tells you in the book not to skip ahead to the end. Read the book one chapter at time and really consider the concepts. It's reprogramming you (quite painlessly) while you do the work. So do the work and reap the reward.
In Conclusion: I must say that I wish I would've known about this book at the start of my sobriety but better late than never! There are lots of paths to recovery and I'm all about finding the method that works best for you. Here is another wonderful option that is worth taking a look at. I'm rooting for you!
How To Get The Book:
It's available through the library and Amazon but Annie Grace sells it through her website as well and there are also challenges to sign up for and podcasts, etc. to help you along the way.
